Ultrasound: 07 April, 2008: Body Measurement.
Today, my wife, Katriina, and I had an ultrasound to obtain the progression of our baby’s early, yet active development. Since our hometown of Kuru didn’t have the capacity to perform the ultrasound procedure, we were sent to a larger town, Ylöjärvi – approximately 15 min. drive from Tampere.
We didn’t have to wait too long before we were called in for the consultation. The female doctor, Vuokko, did not really present herself well to us – from her relaxed handshake, self-presentation and performance. It’s safe to say that she wasn’t really a customer-oriented doctor – or has terrible bedside manners.
Regardless of the doctor and soon-to-be parents interaction, she performed her job. She squeezed couple of ounces of liquid gel on top of Katriina’s abdomen. Afterwards, the doctor released the handheld transducer from the right side of the computer and started pressing against the abdomen. Immediately, a picture of the womb appeared, along with an early stage fetus that could potentially become a Savannara Jr. come late October of this year.
While the doctor was locating a good position to capture an image, it was amazing to see that the baby was already actively moving – as analyzed by the doctor. I can literally see the little figure moving on the ultrasound screen – hands waving, legs kicking, body bouncing up and down. So we were wondering if it will be a boy due to its activeness. It’s still too early, but time will definitely tell the final development of this little Kong monster.

Ultrasound: 07 April, 2008: Head Measurement.
We have predicted the development stages of the baby and it appears that everything is on schedule. As this marks the 12th week of development, Katriina is having less morning (or evening) sickness. She hasn’t had a tremendously difficult first trimester, which is a positive atmosphere for both of us. It’s difficult to visually tell if Katriina’s belly has increased in size as the baby is only approximately 10 grams, but will obviously double in size and weight by the end of this month.
Excitement or Regret?
One has to be uncommitted and had unplanned pregnancy in order to be full of regret for having a baby. Or, having second thoughts about the primitive idea of becoming a parent for the first time. For me, it’s excitement. I’m excited to have my first child. To be honest, I really don’t know what to feel, it hasn’t really hit me yet, even after this ultrasound. It is still something intangible. I’m excited in a calm way that I can not show my emotions but happy to share the great news to families and friends.
Boy or Girl?
Does it really matter? For me, I have no preference. I do have those baseball gloves and ball to play catch though. And this summer, I’m planning to get a portable basketball hoop. It appears that I’m planning and hoping for a boy, but in all actuality, who says that a girl can’t paricipate in any of those sports activities?
Let nature take its course. It’s a long journey ahead for this Kong baby.
